about me
I am someone who is often in search of a way to silence my internal dialogue and be present in the moment. Overstimulation of the senses helps lead to a more focused, calmer state. I often achieve this state of transcendence and peace while being overstimulated by live music and accompanying immersive light shows as visual and sonic stimulation silences my over-analysing mind.

My paintings begin from these feelings and experiences, initially using photographic imagery of light and movement, and then creating digitally layered images, adding further levels of complexity to the image. Through digital images and overpainting, I arrive at a starting point for my paintings. My own painted gestures become another level of movement within these images.

I use highly primed surfaces to paint on, as canvas is not smooth enough. The surface, along with the use of an airbrush and thin veils of liquid paint, enables me to incorporate highly fluid motions and gestures into my painting. Like the Abstract Expressionists, the painted gesture is a key element of my work. Although my work aspires to be expressive, it is not Expressionist in this sense. In my paintings, the marks are more controlled and often translucent or high-gloss. This creates a complexity of layers and a surface which has much in common with screens, monitors and technologically produced surfaces. I also reference the luminosity of the screen with the digital colours and light it radiates, which links to my initial interest in projected light.

Although seemingly contradictory, the more complex the paintings become, the more they hold attention and occupy the mind. Visual overload also leads to a state of inner calm or distraction. As the maker, I find the focus involved in painting is another route to a sense of tranquillity or absorption.
